Many manufacturers turn to CNC milling machines and CNC routers to produce custom parts. But what's the difference between a CNC milling machine and a CNC router? They both perform similar functions but have very different characteristics. You use them with different materials and must be mindful of their production capabilities when using them. Both machines are computer controlled, hence the acronym CNC, which stands for Computer Numerical Control. CNC machines run computer design programmes called Computer Aided Design (CAD) or Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM). CNC milling machines and CNC routers both work by moving a cutting tool around a workpiece in multiple axes. The tool makes cuts to the workpiece, exposing the desired shape. In addition to complete cuts, these cuts can include engraving or contouring. You can use a CNC cutter to manufacture a variety of products, from comfortable kitchen chairs to tiny electronic parts. Both CNC milling machines and CNC routers use a tool called an end mill or router, which has multiple functions. Many projects require multiple end mills or routers to achieve the right combination of cuts. Each machine type works through material reduction manufacturing, which is the process of removing material from a workpiece instead of adding it. CNC milling machines and CNC routers perform similar standard tasks in different ways. Together, we'll learn more about the differences between these two machines in order to choose the best one for your application.

1.What is a CNC router?

CNC routers are distinguished by the materials they can handle. CNC routers are not designed to cut hard materials like steel and titanium. Instead, you'll typically use a router to cut softer materials like plastic, foam, and wood. Some routers can also cut soft metals like aluminium. One of the reasons that CNC routers can only work with softer materials is because of the way they power the cutting tool. A cnc router can cut much faster than a cnc milling machine, but has less torque because the router uses rotational speed to power the tool. Routers can speed up the process and are ideal if multiple pieces need to be machined.Although CNC routers are much faster in revolutions per minute (RPM) than CNC milling mchines, since CNC routers are not as powerful as CNC milling machines, CNC milling machines are a better choice for processing industrial-grade materials. But when you need consistent manufacturing capabilities, CNC routers provide fast reproduction, keeping cutting times to a minimum. However, CNC routers are not as accurate as CNC milling machines, so for projects that require higher precision, CNC milling machines are the best choice. The fixed workpiece design of CNC routers is part of the reason for their lower accuracy. CNC routers typically hold the material on a table and use a spindle head to move in the X, Y, and Z axes. Most routers have at least three axes, but some have four to six axes, making them suitable for more complex projects. In contrast, a CNC milling machine can move the material itself and the end mill to achieve more precise angles.

2.Why choose a CNC router?

CNC routers are not as tightly designed as CNC milling machines because they have a large working surface. Even so, this spatial flexibility allows CNC routers to have high processing speeds. CNC routers are ideal for cutting large plates. Depending on the size of the CNC router and the material you are using, you can even cut the edges of the sheet without having to reposition the material or reprogram the machine. You can use a CNC router to create large format items such as signs, wood carvings, and cabinet panels.

3.What is a CNC milling machine?

CNC milling machines are suitable for heavy duty work. Materials such as steel, aluminium and even titanium can be machined on a CNC milling machine. The strength of traditional materials, such as wood, is very different from the strength of heavy-duty metals, such as stainless steel. Stronger metals require machines specifically designed for their unique properties. This makes CNC milling machines a common method for machining a wide variety of mechanical parts, especially those that require high precision and accuracy.

Compared to CNC routers, CNC milling machines are capable of making finer cuts with an accuracy of up to one thousandth of an inch. This accuracy makes CNC milling machines ideal for making fine workpieces. While CNC milling machines are designed to work with sturdy metals, they can also work with some soft materials. If the job is complex or delicate, a CNC milling machine may still be the best choice for softer materials. One of the reasons CNC milling machines are so precise is the configuration of their axes. While a CNC router moves the router head along the material left on the table, a CNC milling machine moves the workpiece along linear axes, with the spindle of the CNC milling machine moving along the X and Y axes, and the table controlling the Z axis. You can use additional axes, as CNC milling machines can accommodate more than five axes for even more control.

4.Why choose a CNC milling machine?

Because CNC milling machines have a small cutting area, their cutting tools have a small range of motion. While this compact design limits the size of the material you can work with, it also makes the machine more robust, with the strength needed to cut hard materials. This rigidity and smaller range of motion also allows the CNC milling machine to cut with greater precision. The accuracy of a CNC milling machine is perfect for making precision parts that require tight tolerances.

5.What is the difference between a CNC milling machine and a CNC router?

These versatile machines can get a lot done if you use the right machine. Some of the key differences between CNC milling machines and CNC routers are as follows:

Material

One of the most important differences is the materials these machines can be used with. Depending on the goals of your project, you may want to consider how to machine. Both CNC milling machines and CNC routers can cut soft materials such as wood, foam, and plastic, but these materials generally cut better on a CNC router. CNC milling machines are better suited for cutting hard metals like titanium and steel because only CNC milling machines can cut these strong materials.

Processing speed

When making your decision, you need to consider machine speed. If you need to machine a large number of parts, a CNC router will run faster, allowing you to complete more parts in less time. CNC milling machines offer unparalleled precision, but the cutting process takes longer.

Accuracy

Accuracy is an important part of part machining. If you need to machine highly precise parts, such as equipment parts, a CNC mill can cut with much higher precision than a CNC router. The military, medical and aerospace industries are particularly concerned with part accuracy. CNC routers are less precise than cnc milling machines and are best suited for basic cuts in soft materials. At the same time, CNC milling machines can cut with greater precision and complexity than CNC routers. CNC milling machines also have tool configurations that allow for more complex cuts and shapes.

Cutting area

Since machines come in different space options, you must consider your business needs. If a lot of detail is required, CNC milling machines can offer a deeper Z-axis to make deeper cuts in the workpiece. If your original material is very large or wide, such as a large block of wood or foam board, you may want to choose a CNC router with a larger cutting area.
